Dorm Essentials That Are Actually Essential

Moving into a dorm is exciting, but between the Target runs and Amazon wish lists, it's easy to overpack and still miss what you actually need. Here's what really matters, broken down by category.
Sleep & Comfort
Your dorm room is where you recharge. Make it count.
✓ Mattress topper: dorm mattresses are notoriously thin. A memory foam topper is the single best investment you'll make.
✓ Twin XL bedding: most dorm beds are Twin XL. Double check before you buy, and bring two sets of sheets.
✓ Blackout sleep mask or curtains: between streetlights and your roommate's screen, darkness is a luxury.

Study & Academics
Your room doubles as your study space. Set it up to focus.
✓ Power strip with USB ports : outlets are scarce and never where you need them.
✓ Clip-on desk lamp: lets you study without blinding your roommate.
✓ Noise-canceling headphones: for studying, sleeping, and preserving your sanity at midnight.
Bathroom & Personal Care
Communal bathrooms require a game plan.
✓ Shower caddy: keeps your toiletries organized for the trek down the hall.
✓ Shower shoes: non-negotiable. End of discussion.
✓ Full-size towels (at least two): laundry doesn't happen as often as you plan.
Health & Wellness
Don't wait until you're sick to think about this.
✓ Mini first aid kit: band-aids, ibuprofen, cold medicine, allergy medicine, and a thermometer. The basics.
✓ Reusable water bottle : staying hydrated between classes is easier when water's always with you.
✓ Hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes: dorms are communal living. Stay ahead of cold season.
Room Organization
Dorm rooms are tiny. Smart storage is the secret.
✓ Under-bed storage bins: perfect for off-season clothes and things you don't need daily.
✓ Over-the-door organizer: a space-saving miracle for shoes, snacks, or supplies. ✓ Laundry hamper with a shoulder strap: makes laundry day much less painful.
Making It Feel Like Home
Your room should be a place where you can recharge.
✓ Photos and wall decor" Command strips and your favorite pictures make it yours.
✓ String lights or a small lamp: warm lighting transforms a dorm from institutional to cozy.
✓ A comfort item from home: something small that reminds you of home can be surprisingly grounding.
Pack the essentials first, give yourself permission to add things as you go, and remember, you can always make a Target run once you're settled. The most important thing you're bringing to campus? Yourself, ready to learn and grow.
